Late in the evening on December 11, 2023, a distressing incident unfolded at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, CA, as a substantial fire broke out. Emergency responders were quick to the scene, encountering a two-story structure engulfed in smoke and flames.

The tireless efforts of firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control just before 1:30 am on December 12, 2023, though not without two firefighters sustaining moderate injuries during the operation.

California Yacht Club, known for hosting prestigious sailing events, including the J/70 World Championship and US Junior Women’s Championship, suffered a significant blow. Established in 1922 by a dedicated group of yachtsmen in Los Angeles harbour, the club faced challenges during World War II when the Coast Guard requisitioned its facilities. Despite a period of decline, the club experienced a revival in 1961, spurred by former members and yachters taking advantage of the growing Marina del Rey.

Steve Hathaway, a former owner, Steve Hathaway shared the deep sense of loss, saying, “It’s been a home for so many people. We are so heartbroken right now… It tears me apart to see… It’s just terrible.”

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, adding a layer of uncertainty to this unfortunate incident that has left the sailing community in shock. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we stand in solidarity with the California Yacht Club community during this challenging time.
